08 May 2026-OJT enhanced our perspective

In today’s highly competitive job market, practical exposure is considered just as important as academic knowledge. Employers look for candidates who possess not only theoretical understanding but also hands-on experience in their respective fields. In this context, on-the-job training (OJT), internships, and placements play a vital role in preparing trainees for the professional world. Keeping these objectives in mind, the final-year trainees underwent 1½ months of OJT at Tata Motors, Jamshedpur, from 6th March to 24th April 2026.

Four representatives — Shahil Raj Toppo from the Machinist trade, Neha Lakra from Fitter, Ankit Beck from Electrician, and Sumit Toppo from Welder — shared their experiences after completing the training. They expressed that before the commencement of the OJT, there was a sense of anxiety as they were about to enter a reputed company like Tata Motors. At the same time, they carried with them a strong sense of purpose, hope, and eagerness to learn from the experience. Despite certain uncertainties, all the 85 trainees were enthusiastic about participating in the training program. Unfortunately, five trainees had to return midway due to medical and fitness-related issues.

The trainees shared that standing and working continuously for eight hours during the initial days was quite challenging, but gradually they adapted themselves to the demanding work schedule. Before joining, they were thoroughly briefed about the company’s safety norms, work ethics, and operational procedures. Since the production unit consists of several sections, the trainees were assigned to different departments according to the work requirements.

They were deeply impressed by the discipline, order, and professionalism maintained within the factory premises. Safety measures were given utmost importance; wearing helmets inside the factory was compulsory, and the use of mobile phones during duty hours was strictly prohibited. The scale of operations at the company was remarkable, with nearly 600 trucks being assembled every day. With around 30,000 employees working in the establishment, approximately 250 buses run daily to facilitate transportation for the workforce.

Each section functioned under the guidance of supervisors who ensured smooth coordination and proper execution of work. The trainees appreciated the quality of food provided in the factory as well as the good hostel facilities. They were especially impressed that there was no power interruption during their stay. Although the hostel meal timings were somewhat irregular and required adjustment, the trainees gradually adapted themselves to the routine. The girl trainees also mentioned that they were treated with special care, dignity, and respect both in the factory and in the hostel.

At the end of the training, the trainees felt that the OJT experience had significantly broadened their perspective and contributed greatly to their personal and professional growth. Some of the major takeaways from the training included time management, self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility, and workplace ethics. The officers and senior employees were supportive, encouraging, and motivating throughout the training period. Overall, the company environment fostered growth, learning, and development. All the 80 trainees who successfully completed the OJT returned with a strong sense of achievement, confidence, and satisfaction.
